Vitamins and minerals are essential to your body's optimal functioning. They perform many important functions. Many vitamins and minerals are present in the food you eat. Vitamins appear to be most beneficial when they are obtained from a varied heart-healthy diet, consisting of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, as well as lean meat. Therefore, this is always the best place to start to fulfill your daily needs.

Once you have the basics of a balanced diet in place, your doctor or registered dietitian may recommend you supplement your diet with additional vitamins, minerals, or other nutrition supplements.

Remember, you should always check with your doctor before you begin taking supplements of any kind. If you are already taking supplements, you should report these to your doctor as part of the medications you take.
