Depression is a term that covers a range of feelings and conditions that require varying degrees of attention and treatment. These can range from temporary feelings of sadness and loss to a longer-term clinical depression. Mild forms of depression, often described as being sad or blue, are felt by most people dealing with disease, loss or change. Often these feelings are easily recognized and can be addressed successfully on your own or with the help of family, friends or a support group.

Managing depression, however, is different from coping with anxiety or anger. You may tend to withdraw when you are sad or depressed, and this withdrawal can deepen the depression. You may have difficulty with sleep, cry frequently, lack motivation, lose your appetite and alternatively, overeat. These can be signs of significant depression. It may impair your recovery and make your cardiovascular symptoms worse.

If you think you may be suffering from depression, you should discuss this with your doctor. Your recovery to a sense of well being may require counseling, support group interaction or specific depression fighting medications. The medications available for this purpose are often quite effective and can sometimes be used temporarily to promote a return to your normal health.
