| Certain
medical conditions such as diabetes may require very specific
nutritional interventions. A personalized nutrition plan
formulated by a registered
dietitian may work best in these instances.

No discussion of lifestyle management of cardiovascular disease is complete without a close look at nutrition. There is no
question that the food you eat can greatly impact your health. Yet, making dietary changes can be very difficult.
The food we eat is closely bound to our individual cultures, attitudes, beliefs, and our sense of self. We often resist making changes to the way we eat,
even when faced with a serious health problem.
But it is possible to change. You can permanently redesign the way you eat, and even come to truly enjoy, not just
tolerate, the new foods that can keep you healthy.
This section provides you with the information you need to make changes toward healthy nutrition. You will learn about the different nutrients that are part
of a healthy diet and how to control fat, calories, and salt intake. Commonly asked questions will be answered. We have also included a recipe book with a
few choices to get you started, several sample menus and an easy reference chart of healthy food choices.
The first step in building good nutrition is to understand the nutrients or components that make up a healthy diet. Each plays an
important role in keeping your body working at top efficiency. Just as you are careful to put the right combination of gas, oil, and other fluids into your car
to maximize its performance, the right combination of nutrients can produce the same results as you "fuel" your own complex body.
