If your problem is sudden loss of consciousness, you have had
syncope. There are many causes of fainting spells, and they include heart rhythm abnormalities
like bradycardia or tachycardia. The evaluation for this problem varies from patient to patient
but in addition to a careful history, you may be asked to have a tilt-table test or an
electrophysiology study (EPS). The treatment may involve medication or the implantation of heart
rhythm devices. Your doctor will describe his or her recommendations with you carefully. Please
refer to the Diagnostic Testing section for information about these tests.
